The big news bird-wise in October was the large number of Red-breasted Nuthatches found along the coast, where they are normally rare. We also fielded reports of high Pine Siskin numbers, especially along the coast where flocks were feeding in the beach grass. Where are these birds coming from--local mountains, Canada? With so many Mountain Chickadees in the high Cascades at the start of October, it will be interesting to see if they show up in large numbers around the valley this winter. We already have one report.
